Crafting Mathematics: About Making and Mathematics

Abstract: Ten years ago, we initiated a project led by a small community of basket weavers, anthropologists, and math educators (https://forcesintranslation.org/). In this project we explored areas of contact between mathematical and craft practices. We participated in a regular studio, based on the shared sense that craft and mathematics are equal players without hierarchical differences between them. Several times a year we organized workshops in community centers and museums open to the public — families, teachers, children, and adults — to engage them in the kind of investigations, craftwork, and reflections that we pursued. A forthcoming book entitled “Crafting Mathematics” describes our experiences. Our emerging perspectives advance the notion that working on the egalitarian continuities between crafts and mathematics offers opportunities to integrate hands and brains, as well as materiality and imaginaries, towards rethinking anew what counts as concrete and abstract and enriching our encounters with mathematics and crafts. In addition, we learned about many colleagues and educators pursuing related approaches all over the world.
