“Regularity results for a class of strongly degenerateparabolic equations”

Motivated by applications to gas filtration problems, we study the

regularity of weak solutions to the strongly degenerateparabolic PDE

ut – div [((|Du| – 𝜈)+)^{p-1}Du/|Du|] = f in ΩT = Ω × (0, T),

where Ω is a bounded domain in Rn for n ≥ 2, p ≥ 2, 𝜈 is a positive

constant and (⋅)+ stands for the positive part. Assumingthat the datum

f belongs to a suitable Lebesgue-Sobolev parabolic space, weestablish

the Sobolev spatial regularity of a nonlinear function ofthe spatial

gradient Du of the weak solutions, which in turn implies theexistence

of the weak time derivative ut. Next, we weaken theassumption on the

right-hand side, by assuming that f belongs to a suitablelocal

Lebesgue-Besov space. This leads us to obtain fractionalSobolev

regularity results for a function of Du, which in turn yieldthe higher

summability of Du with respect to the spatial variable. Themain novelty

here is that the structure function of the above equationsatisfies

standard growth and ellipticity conditions only outside theball with

radius 𝜈 centered at the origin.

Titolo: A thermal insulation problem witha prescribed heat source

Abstract: We study the thermal insulationof a bounded body $Omegasubsetmathbb{R}^n$, under a prescribed heat source$f > 0$, via a bulk layer of insulating material. We consider a model ofheat transfer between the insulated body and the environment determined byconvection; this corresponds to Robin boundary conditions on the free boundaryof the layer. We show that a minimal con guration exists and that it satisfiesuniform density estimates.

“The prescribed scalar curvature problem in the negative Yamabe case ”

We will discuss some recent progress
on the conformally prescribed scalar curvature problem
in case of a negative Yamabe invariant,
which is resolved,
if the function K to be prescribed is strictly negative,
while necessary and sufficient conditions are known,
if K is nowhere positive.
On the other hand, if K is sign changing,
little is known in general beyond smallness assumptions
on the max(K,0). We adress the latter case variationally,
still in the realm of smallness assumptions,
and shed some light on the underlying features of the problem.
The presented techniques do not only allow to recover,
what is known up to now, in a quite natural way,
but also adds some new existence results.
Time permitting, we shall exemplify, what happens,
if the smallness assumptions fail.

“Estimates for Robin p-Laplacian eigenvalues of convex sets with prescribed perimeter”

We will consider the shape optimization problem of minimizing/maximizing

the first eigenvalue of the p-Laplace operator with Robin boundary

conditions in the class of convex sets. In particular, when imposing a

perimeter constraint, we will study the behavior of the eigenvalues as

the boundary parameter beta varies in R. We prove an upper bound for the

first Robin eigenvalue of the p-Laplacian with a positive boundary parameter and a quantitative

versionof the reverse Faber-Krahn type inequality for the first Robin eigenvalue of the

p-Laplacian with negative boundary parameter, making use of a comparison

argument obtained by means of inner parallel sets.

The results are contained in a joint work with V. Amato and A. Gentile.

“Somea symptotic quantitative inequalities”.

Abstract:The classical quantitative isoperimetric inequality has opened the way for a rich line of research into quantitative versions of many inequalities. In practice, such an inequality aims to estimate how much a set with an almost minimal perimeter must be ‘similar’ to a ball.

We will discuss the case where a spectral inequality is not achieved. In particular, we will analyse the case of two inequalities, one concerning torsional rigidity and the other the first non-trivial Neumann eigenvalue, both of which are asymptotically achieved by a sequence of thinning rectangles.

Joint works with D. Bucur, A.L. Masiello, G. Paoli and R. Sannipoli.

I will try to describe some of the thingswe have learnt, over the past few years, about three fundamental questions inthe global theory of free boundary minimal surfaces; given that context, I willthen focus on one of the latest advances, that is a methodology to gaineffective estimates on the spectrum of Schrödinger-type operators by designingsuitable partitions of the domain and associated collections of mixed boundaryvalue problems. As an application, this allowed us to obtain the firsttwo-sided, explicit affine bounds on the Morse index of various families ofFBMS in the three-dimensional Euclidean ball. The lecture is aimed at thegeneral mathematical audience.

Titolo: ‘Viscosity solutions for nonlocal equations with space-dependent operators’.

Abstract: This talk focuses on a nonlocal operator of fractional-laplacian type, where integration is taken on a variable domain. Similar operators arise naturally in the hydrodynamic limit of suitable kinetic equations in bounded domains.
We prove that the associated elliptic and parabolic problems admit a unique viscosity solution. In addition, we study the corresponding eigenvalue problems. This is a joint work with Ulisse Stefanelli.

Abstract: In this talk we will introduce the so-called Malliavin-Stein approach for obtaining quantitative central limit theorems for functionals of Gaussian fields, that this combination works admirably well was discovered by Nourdin and Peccati in their seminal paper from 2009. Then we will present an improved version of the second-order Gaussian Poincaré inequality, first introduced in Chatterjee (2009) and Nourdin et al. (2009), and consequent applications.

VARIATIONAL CONVERGENCE FOR THE GINZBURG-LANDAU FUNCTIONAL ON
COMPLEX LINE BUNDLES

ABSTRACT. The Ginzburg-Landau functional was originally proposed as a model
for superconductivity in Euclidean domains. However, invariance with respect to gauge
transformations – which is one of the most prominent features of the model -suggests
that the functional can be naturally defined in the setting of complex line bundles, where
it can be regarded as an Abelian Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. In this talk, we shall consider
the Ginzburg-Landau functional on a Hermitian line bundle over a closed Riemannian
manifold, in the scaling inherited from superconductivity theory. We shall focus on the
variational aspects of the problem (and describe the main ideas without going too much
into the technicalities). In particular, we shall discuss the asymptotic behaviour, in the
so-called ”London limit”, of minimisers and critical points whose energy grows at most
logarithmically in the Ginzburg-Landau coupling parameter. The talk is based on a joint
work with Federico Dipasquale (Scuola Superiore Meridionale) and Giandomenico Orlandi (Verona).

IMPROVED BOUNDS FOR THE KAKEYA MAXIMAL CONJECTURE
USING SEMIALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY

ABSTRACT. The Kakeya problem considers tubes which point in different directions and
the extent to which they can be compressed by positioning them strategically. On the one
hand, we will see that the measure of any semialgebraic set that contains the tubes must
satisfy the expected bound. That is to say, the tubes cannot be compressed too much
if they are positioned in an algebraic way. The proof employs tools from real algebraic
geometry including the Tarski-Seidenberg projection theorem and the Gromov-Yomdin
algebraic lemma. On the other hand, the expected bound holds in the absence of algebraic structure, by polynomial partitioning. Balancing between the two extremes yields
improved bounds for the Kakeya maximal conjecture in higher dimensions. This is joint
work with J. Hickman, N. Katz and R. Zhang

The aim of the workshop is to bring together experts in shape optimization and partial differential equations (PDEs) to encourage the exchange of knowledge, the interdisciplinary discussions and inspire collaborations. The event provides a platform for presenting the latest research, exploring practical applications,  highlighting efficient computational techniques, and addressing open questions.

Abstract

• Dalla lettura del Prologo del Liber Abbaci di Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci si comprende che tale opera è stata dedi- cata a Michele Scoto, famoso astrologo attivo nella corte di Federico II di Svevia. Anche altre opere del matemati- co pisano sono dedicate ad alcuni esponenti di questo fiorente ambiente culturale di cui Federico II fu ideatore e che Fibonacci incontrò probabilmente a Pavia tra il 1245 e il 1248. Questo testimonia il legame che esisteva tra il matematico e l’Imperatore, dalla personalità eclettica, curiosa e, amante dello scibile, estremamente moderna ri- spetto ai suoi tempi. Elementi significativi della vita di questo periodo storico sono presenti all’interno del Liber Abbaci, nel quale Fibonacci descrive una nuova matematica al mondo occidentale, risultata dall’interazione della cultura greco-latina con il mondo arabo. L’uso di questa fonte storica permette agli studenti d’oggi di fare ritorno all’origine delle cose, permettendo loro l’apprendimento di concetti matematici fondamentali, inseriti in specifi- che attività laboratoriali, così come sono comparsi nella storia nella loro semplicità.

“An introduction to Fibrations in Logic and Type Theory”

The notion of fibration was introduced by A. Grothendieck in a purely geometric context [1],
providing a fundamental tool in category theory that is pervasive in many areas of mathematics. In
this talk, we will explore some applications of fibrations to logic and type theory [2]. To achieve this,
we will begin by analyzing the classical example of indexed families of sets and then discuss the
general definition and the main properties of fibrations. Time permitting, we will present some current
applications to foundations of constructive mathematics based on the Minimalist Foundation of
Maietti and Sambin [3,4].

L’incontro fa parte di una serie, le cui precedenti edizioni si sono tenute presso le Università di Genova (2015), Insubria (2018), Roma Sapienza (2022) con l’obiettivo di “dare voce a matematici e scienziati computazionali, soprattutto della nuova generazione, con l’obiettivo di fare il punto sullo stato dell’arte e le prospettive del Calcolo Scientifico nell’ambito della Matematica Applicata, ma anche a gettare ponti verso applicazioni particolarmente innovative in cui i metodi computazionali svolgono un ruolo rilevante; tra queste, l’Ottimizzazione su Reti, il Data Assimilation, l’Informatica Matematica, la Statistica e le tematiche numeriche connesse”.

L’edizione 2024 includerà anche una sessione dedicata a Daniela di Serafino, prematuramente scomparsa e fra i proponenti e organizzatori di questo incontro. Sarà un’occasione per rinnovare e ricordare l’impegno e la passione con i quali Daniela si è spesa nel suo lavoro anche nei momenti più difficili.

“Harnack inequalities & quantitative estimates for Kolmogorov equations with rough coefficients”

In this talk, we will present a Harnack inequality and quantitative a priori estimates, such as Poincaré inequalities and L²-L∞ estimates, for weak solutions to Kolmogorov equations with rough coefficients. Furthermore, we will show some applications of these regularity results to problems arising in various contexts, such as the option pricing problem or the mean field analysis of population dynamics.

This is a lively research area with a variety of interesting challenges spanning from fundamental modeling issues to rigorous mathematical foundations, at the intersection point among continuum mechanics, calculus of variations, geometric measure theory, partial differential equations, and nonlinear functional analysis. “A differential version of Ershov’s theorem”
Ershov’s theorem describes the completions of the theory of separably closed fields
based of the degree of imperfection. In this talk, I will present an analogue in the
context of differential fields. We will first introduce the class of separably differentially
closed fields and note that this class is elementary (i.e., axiomatizable in first-order
logic), denoted by SDCF. We will then define the notion of “differential” degree of
imperfection and explain why the completions SDCF and determined by specifying the
characteristic and the differential degree of imperfection

“Positive logic and automorphisms of ordered abelian groups and valued
fields”
I will talk about recent joint work with Jan Dobrowolski, where we study ordered
abelian groups with an automorphism. We prove that their embeddings have the
Amalgamation Property, and deduce that the existentially closed ones, despite not
forming an elementary class, are NIP when studied in the framework of positive logic.
The talk will feature an introduction to positive logic, an exposition of the results on
automorphisms of ordered abelian groups and, if time permits, I will also talk about
work in progress of myself, Jan Dobrowolski and Francesco Gallinaro, about extending
these techniques to the study of existentially closed valued fields of residue
characteristic 0 with an automorphism.

“ON THE RATE OF GENERIC GORENSTEIN K-ALGEBRAS”

Abstract. The rate of a standard graded K-algebra A is a measure of the growth of the shifts in a minimal free resolution of K as A-module. In particular A has rate one if and only if A is Koszul. It is known that a generic Artinian Gorenstein algebra of socle degree three is Koszul. We extend this result showing that if A is a generic Artinian Gorenstein algebra of socle degree s ≥ 3, then the rate of A is ⌊s/2⌋. In proving it, we get that a generic Artinian Gorenstein K-algebra of embedding dimension at least four and socle degree s ≥ 3 is generated in degree ⌊s/2⌋ + 1. This gives a partial positive answer to a longstanding conjecture stated by M. Boij on the resolution of a generic Artinian Gorenstein ring of odd socle degree. This is a joint work with M.Boij, A. De Stefani and M.E. Rossi.

“COMPUTATIONAL COMMUTATIVE ALGEBRA WITH POMMARET BASES”

Abstract. The talk gives an introduction into some basic problems in computational commutative algebra and into Groebner and involutive bases as fundamental tools to tackle them. As one application, we will show how Stanley decompositions can be used to measure the size of a polynomial ideal. As another application, syzygies, free resolutions and related homological invariants are discussed. It turns out that Pommaret bases, a special form of involutive bases, contain much more information than ordinary Groebner bases and are thus of particular interest for commutative algebra and algebraic geometry.

Abstract

Over the complex numbers the solutions to enumerative problems are invariant: the number of solutions of a polynomial equation or polynomial system, the number of lines or curves in a surface, etc. Over the real numbers such invariance fails. However, the signed count of solutions may lead to numerical invariants: Descartes’ rule of signs, Poincaré-Hopf theorem, real curve-counting invariants.

The goal of this talk is to illustrate a generalized notion of sign that allows us to state a motivic version of classical problems: the number of lines on cubic surfaces, the Bézout theorem, and the curve-counting invariants.

“A Strong Form of the Quantitative Wulff Inequality for Crystalline Norms”

Abstract: The anisotropic perimeter is a natural functional appearing in the mathematical framework for determining equilibrium states of crystals in media. As with the usual isotropic perimeter there is an analogous anisotropic isoperimetric inequality, known as the Wulff inequality, where minimizers of the volume constrained anisotropic perimeter problem, known as Wulff shapes, are characterized. In view of statistical mechanics, almost-minimizers are the most likely observable states; as such their identification is just as important as that of the absolute minimizers. In this talk we will explore a recent result by the speaker which proves quantitative control on almost-minimizers in an H^1 sense when the Wulff shape is a polytope, an upgrade from the previous
L^2 control via the so-called Fraenkel asymmetry.
