Reductive Algebraic Groups and
the Geometry of Character Varieties
Abstract: This talk will begin with a brief introduction to algebraic groups, with a particular emphasis on reductive algebraic groups. For a reductive group G and a finitely generated group Γ, I will introduce the (moduli) spaces of representations of Γ into G, known as G-character varieties.
These spaces are central objects in modern mathematics, with deep connections to hyperbolic geometry, the theory of vector bundles and connections, knot theory, and quantum field theory.
