Lunedì 27 gennaio alle ore 10.30 nella sala riunioni secondo livello del DMA, la Prof.ssa Eveline Volcke, Ghent University, terrà un seminario dal titolo:

Title: Modelling biofilm reactors for wastewater treatment: what’s the use?

Abstract: Wastewater treatment is essential to protect human health and the environment. Organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus need to be removed to ensure that the clean water quality complies with the EU regulations. Moreover, additional objectives dealing with the sustainability of wastewater treatment are gaining importance, aiming for compact processes, reductions in the amount of energy used, the resources or added chemicals, and minimizing by-products and emissions of greenhouse gases, among others. Biofilm-based processes are compact and very suitable to grow slow-growing micro-organisms which form the basis of novel biological pathways with promising characteristics.
Granular sludge reactors can be seen as a particular type of biofilm reactors, without carrier material.

In this presentation, Eveline Volcke will share some of her experiences with anammox-based granular sludge reactors as well as aerobic granular sludge reactors. More specifically, she will discuss the usefulness of mathematical modelling and simulation to gain process insight, for process optimization, to test the feasibility of new processes, regarding greenhouse gas emissions and to investigate novel plant layouts.
